Cloudflare Just Shut the Door on AI: 20% of the Internet Now Off-Limits.

Cloudflare Just Told AI to Get Fcked: 20% of the Internet is Now Members Only

Here’s what just happened: Cloudflare, which protects a staggering one-fifth of all websites, now blocks AI companies from scraping its clients’ content by default. Additionally, their new “pay per crawl” rule means AI developers must pay just to access each web page. Major publishers are already on board. In short, the endless AI data buffet is closed.

6 Burning Questions That Follow:

1. What happens when 20% of the internet is blocked from AI?
Imagine AI models as trick-or-treaters, and suddenly, 20 out of every 100 houses on the block go dark. Will these AIs go hungry, or will they start rummaging through whatever scraps are left? Is this part of the internet filled with prime content like Wikipedia and major news sites, or is it mostly low-value clickbait?

2. Are we witnessing a ‘Data Land Grab’?
It’s the era of paywalled data. AI startups will need to spend heavily on “crawl credits” just to train effectively. Those without a budget might be limited to lower-quality, openly available content or outdated Wikipedia edits.

3. Is this an alliance among publishers, or dividing lines?
Big publishers are teaming up against free AI scraping, with Cloudflare acting as the enforcer. Meanwhile, smaller creators are left wondering if they’ve just become invisible. If only wealthy companies can afford access, will advanced AI become a luxury for the rich?

4. Will this make the internet worse for everyone?
If leading websites are locked away, top search results and AI answers could become less accurate or more outdated. The next time you ask an assistant for a joke or a fact, it might give you a dusty meme or an old reference.

5. Who wins and who’s left behind?
Winners: Large publishers protecting their content, Cloudflare (holding the keys), and inevitably lawyers. Losers: Small AI startups, users expecting free, current answers, and the 20% of sites still open (soon to be flooded by desperate bots).

6. Does this change the game?
For ecommerce: AI won’t know about your shop or product launches unless you pay for access. For content creators: Your work now has a price tag. For users: Expect AIs to provide less fresh, less accurate information unless paywalls come down.

The Bottom Line:
The internet has become a gated community, accessible only to paying users. Will ChatGPT become less intelligent? Will everything eventually require payment? There’s no clear answer yet, but one thing’s certain: the era of free data is coming to an end.

AVITUDE BLOG POST 0144 - The Mystery of Google’s “Link Echoes”: Why Backlinks Keep Haunting Your Rankings Long After They’re Gone

The Mystery of Google’s “Link Echoes”: Why Backlinks Keep Haunting Your Rankings Long After They’re Gone

Picture this: you spend hours building backlinks to help your website climb up Google’s rankings. Your hard work pays off, and your site moves to the top. Then, you take those links away, thinking your ranking will drop immediately. But it doesn’t. Your site keeps its spot, hanging on like a friendly ghost that refuses to leave.

That’s the strange effect of what’s now called Google’s “Link Echoes.” Thanks to a recent leak from Google’s algorithm, SEOs are rethinking how backlinks work.

The Backlink Boogie: How Google Keeps Dancing to Old Links

Last week, an insider leak exposed an intriguing phenomenon: Google has been silently maintaining the count of backlinks even after their removal. Therefore, links you believed were permanently erased from the web might still affect Google’s algorithm, impacting your rankings even after they vanish. This observation wasn’t merely speculative; it was backed by a surprising test.

The Experiment That Shook SEO

Two websites, each from completely different niches (so we’re not just talking about some weird industry-specific quirk), were given 22 backlinks of similar quality. Predictably, both sites skyrocketed in Google’s rankings. Backlinks work, folks.

Then, here’s where it gets wild: the backlinks were removed.

Now, logically, you’d expect the rankings to nosedive, right? Nope.

One site’s position barely budged

The other dropped only a little

This wasn’t a one-time fluke, either. This test was replicated at least a dozen times at different sites and in various niches; the same outcome was achieved every time.

What does this mean? Google’s algorithm seems to be “remembering” backlinks long after disappearing, like a relentless stalker tracking every move.

Why Do “Link Echoes” Exist?

At first glance, this might look like a bug in Google’s system. But there’s more to this ghost story:

Google considers backlinks a fundamental indicator of site authority and trust. Monitoring links over time, even after they are removed, may assist Google in preventing abrupt ranking disruptions.

This “memory” might serve as a buffer against manipulation, preventing sites from gaming rankings by building backlinks just for a quick spike, then deleting them.

On the flip side, it also means your SEO sins (or successes) linger.

The Double-Edged Sword: Why This Makes SEO Both Powerful and Risky

If you’re serious about SEO, backlinks have always been king. This leak confirms that Google treats backlinks like echoes influencing your rankings for a long time.

Good news: Build high-quality backlinks, and Google’s love lasts longer than you think. Your hard SEO work pays off well beyond today.

Bad news: Try to cheat the system by buying or building low-quality, spammy links? Google’s keeping score, and when it counts, you’ll be haunted by those crap links for ages. They can drag down your rankings long after you think you’re in the clear.

What This Means for Your SEO Strategy

Prioritize quality over quantity. Don’t just stack junk backlinks hoping to trick Google. They might haunt you.

Keep track of your backlink profile regularly, not only for new links but also for old ones that could be negatively affecting your ranking.

Be patient. If you’re cleaning up spammy links, don’t expect immediate ranking recovery. The “link echo” effect means that it can take time.

Want to explore this phenomenon further? Here’s an excellent article that provides the full details, experiments, and implications of link echoes.

Conclusion: The Ghost in Google’s Machine

The revelation about the link echoes changes the SEO game. It underscores why backlinks remain a cornerstone of ranking signals and why shortcuts can come back to bite you.

So next time you celebrate a backlink victory or rush to remove toxic ones, remember that those links may never completely disappear from Google’s view. They leave echoes, the digital equivalent of footsteps in a dark hallway, always present and shaping your site’s fate.

Are you ready to face the echoes you’ve created? Or will you build your SEO castle on solid, lasting foundations?

(*And hey, if you thought this blog post was just about backlinks, consider this your invitation to explore the endless quirks and mysteries lurking inside search algorithms. Spoiler: There are many more ghost stories about where this came from.)

How to Craft a Resume and Cover Letter That Gets You Noticed (Without the Headache)

How to Craft a Resume and Cover Letter That Gets You Noticed (Without the Headache)

Applying for jobs can feel like navigating a maze blindfolded: confusing, frustrating, and often leaving you wondering if your efforts will ever pay off. You spend hours perfecting your resume and cover letter, only to hear crickets. What gives?

Let’s cut through the noise and demystify the whole process. Imagine creating a simple, powerful, recruiter-friendly application kit that makes you stand out without stressing over every word. Sounds good, right? Buckle up, because I’m about to break down exactly how to craft a resume and cover letter that scream, “Hey recruiter, I’m exactly what you’re looking for!” all without wasting your precious time.

The Not-So-Secret Secret: Keep It Simple, Keep It Sharp

When it comes to your cover letter, less really is more. The recruiters sifting through hundreds (or thousands!) of applications have the attention span of a caffeinated squirrel. So drown them in a novel, and you’re toast.

Your cover letter should be a single paragraph of laser-focused goodness, something like this:

“Hi, my name is [Your Name]. As outlined in my resume, I’m qualified for this role because of [key reason 1], [key reason 2], and [key reason 3]. I’m excited about possibly contributing to [Company Name] and look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for considering my application.”

That’s it — just four sentences, no fluff. If you want to add a tasteful picture of yourself, go for it, but it’s not required. The idea is to be clear, concise, and courteous.

The Resume: Your One-Page Power Pitch

Your resume isn’t your life story; it’s your highlight reel. Aim for one page and organize it so recruiters can scan it like a Sunday crossword puzzle. Structure it like this:

Contact Details: At the top of the page, it is clear as day.

Work Experience: The juicy bits that prove you can do the job.

Education: Optional, but helpful if it’s relevant.

Personal Projects: Show off any side gigs that matter to the role.

Hobbies/Other Stuff: At the bottom, because, hey, we’re people, not robots!

Nail Your Work Experience Section With This Trick

Here’s the game-changer: Pick three examples or accomplishments for each relevant job or project that showcase your skills. Then, for each instance, write three complete sentences where you emphasize the key points in bold.

Say you’re applying for a management role; you might write:

Led teams of three to five people, coordinating project timelines and deliverables.

Implemented process improvements that increased team productivity by 20%.

Facilitated communication between departments to ensure seamless project execution.

Bold the parts that you want the recruiter to notice instantly. This makes their job easy and gets your strengths to pop out at a glance.

Why This Works: Speaking Recruiter Language

Recruiters are like efficiency machines. They scan resumes at the speed of light, hunting for keywords and relevant experience. A bulky resume or a long-winded cover letter is your enemy.

By making your key accomplishments bold and your cover letter ultra-short, you’re saying:
“Hey, I respect your time, and here’s exactly why I’m a fit.”

This approach makes it easy for them to say yes and move you to the next round.

Final Thoughts: Your Job Hunt, Simplified

In summary:

Keep your cover letter to one concise paragraph.

Structure your resume as a clean, one-page highlight reel.

Use bold strategically to guide recruiters’ eyeballs.

Focus on job-relevant skills and experiences only.

Applying for jobs doesn’t need to be a Herculean challenge. Sometimes, the most straightforward approach is the best.

Ready to make your application sparkle? Start drafting your one-paragraph cover letter and a bold-faced resume today, and watch the doors swing open.

P.S. Just shout if you need a quick cheat sheet or template for your next resume and cover letter. I’m here to make your job hunt much less annoying.

INTRODUCTION

Start with a relatable, everyday scenario that illustrates why people struggle with [TOPIC]

Use a conversational, slightly self-deprecating tone

Introduce an intriguing question or problem that will hook readers

Add a humorous aside or parenthetical thought (Tim often uses these)

Promise a deep dive that will genuinely help readers understand this complex topic

THE BIG CONCEPT

Introduce a central metaphor or mental model that will frame the entire post (like the “Social Approval Mammoth” or the “Instant Gratification Monkey”)

Define this concept with simple language but profound implications

Create a simple stick figure illustration using basic shapes and lines to represent the concept in a humorous way.

Explain why this mental model is useful for understanding the topic

EVOLUTIONARY/HISTORICAL CONTEXT

Go back to prehistoric times or historical origins to explain why humans think/behave this way

Connect ancient patterns to modern problems

Use humor to make this history lesson entertaining

BREAKING DOWN THE PROBLEM

Divide the main concept into 3-5 distinct components or patterns

For each component:
 * Create a catchy, slightly absurd subheading
 * Explain with a mix of logic and humor
 * Provide real-world examples that readers will recognize in their own lives
 * Include a surprising insight or counterintuitive fact

THE SPECTRUM

Create a spectrum or matrix showing different types of people/behaviors related to the topic

Label the extremes with humorous but accurate descriptions

Place yourself somewhere on this spectrum (usually not at the ideal point)

Explain the consequences of being at different points

GOING DEEPER (THE TANGENT)

Take a fascinating detour into a related but unexpected aspect of the topic

Start with “Now let’s talk about something interesting…”

Make connections that most explanations of this topic don’t cover

Return to how this connects to the main concept

PRACTICAL STRATEGIES

Introduce 5-7 actionable techniques for mastering this concept

For each technique:
 * Give it a memorable name
 * Explain the psychology/science behind why it works
 * Provide a concrete example of implementing it
 * Address common obstacles or misunderstandings

PHILOSOPHICAL IMPLICATIONS

Zoom out to the bigger life questions this topic connects to

Discuss what mastering this concept means for human happiness/fulfillment

Share a personal reflection or realization

Acknowledge the difficulty of implementing these ideas

CONCLUSION

Return to the central metaphor/mental model

Summarize the key insights in a non-generic way

End with a thought-provoking question or call-to-action

Add a humorous final stick figure or aside

BONUS SECTION

Include a “Wait But What About…” section addressing common questions/objections

Add a recommended reading list with quirky descriptions of each source

NOTES:

Intersperse humor throughout, especially when explaining complex concepts

Use casual language and occasional profanity for emphasis

Create simple but effective diagrams at key points

Make paragraphs short and readable

Use bold text for key concepts worth remembering

Include numerous examples that make abstract ideas concrete

Embrace occasional tangents if they’re genuinely interesting

Don’t be afraid of length - Wait But Why posts are comprehensive

The Digital Stamp of Truth: How We’ll Know What’s Real in the Age of AI

These days, something feels different. It’s not just because the internet is faster or because we have small computers in our pockets. It’s a bigger shift in how we see the world and what we believe. We get so much information constantly that it can be hard to keep up. One big reason for this is content made by artificial intelligence, or AI.

It’s challenging nowadays to distinguish reality from fiction. While fake news is prevalent, it represents just a fraction of the issue. It’s also about trusting what we see daily, whether pictures, news articles, or the voices we hear. How can we connect with others or understand the truth if we can’t tell what is genuine?

When Reality Gets Blurry

Recall a few years back. Most of the pictures you found online were taken by someone. The words you read in an article were penned by a person. If you heard a voice, it was usually a human speaking. There were always some fakes, of course, but it was often quite easy to distinguish them.

Now, things are changing at a speed that makes your head spin. AI can create images that look exactly like photos, even of events that never happened. It can write entire articles that sound just like they were written by a human. It can even generate voices that sound so real you might think your friend is calling you when it’s just a computer.

I recall encountering an AI-generated image of a dog in sunglasses at a small café table. It appeared incredibly realistic, absurd, and utterly implausible simultaneously. For a brief moment, my mind attempted to process it as if it were a genuine moment caught on camera. And that’s merely an amusing image. What occurs when the images aren’t amusing, or the words carry more weight than entertainment?

This is where the idea of a “digital stamp of truth” comes in. How do we protect ourselves if AI can make anything look and sound real? How do we build a shared understanding of what’s true? It’s like we’re building a new world, and we need new rules and tools to help us navigate it.

Searching for Certainty in a Digital World

One of the biggest names in tech, Google, is trying to help with this. They recently talked about a new tool called “SynthID Detector.” Think of it like a special magnifying glass for content.

According to Google DeepMind’s Pushmeet Kohli, this tool is “a verification portal” that can “quickly and efficiently identify AI-generated content made with Google AI.” He also says it can “highlight which parts of the content are more likely to have been watermarked with SynthID.”

So, how does it work? It’s pretty clever.

Invisible Watermarks: When Google’s AI tools (like Gemini for text, or Imagen for pictures) create something, they put a secret, invisible “watermark” on it. You can’t see or hear this watermark.

The Detector’s Job: When you use the SynthID Detector, it scans the content. It’s looking for that secret watermark.

Pointing Out the AI: If the detector finds the watermark, it tells you the content was made with Google’s AI. And it doesn’t just say “yes” or “no.” For pictures, it can show you which parts of the image have the watermark. For audio, it can point to specific sections.

As Kohli explains: “When you upload an image, audio track, video, or piece of text created using Google’s AI tools, the portal will scan the media for a SynthID watermark. If a watermark is detected, the portal will highlight specific portions of the content most likely to be watermarked.”

This is a big step. It allows us to check if something came from Google’s AI. It’s like a baker putting a special mark on their bread so you know it came from their shop.

But here’s the thing: this tool only works for content made by Google’s AI systems. What about all the other AI tools out there? What about people who use AI and then try to hide that fact? The problem of knowing what’s real is much bigger than just one company’s tools.

Our Part in the Puzzle

So, what can we learn from this?

First, it shows that even the big tech companies see this problem. They know that trust is important. Their effort with SynthID Detector signals that this is a conversation we all need to have.

Second, it teaches us to be more thoughtful about the content we see every day. We can’t just assume everything is what it seems. We need to be like friendly detectives, asking a few simple questions:

Who made this? Is there a clear source?

Does this feel right? Sometimes your gut can tell you if something is off.

Can I check this elsewhere? Look for other sources that say the same thing.

Am I seeing a stamp of truth? Does it have a watermark or some other sign that it’s verified?

The world is not going to slow down. AI will keep improving at creating things that look and sound like real life. And that’s okay, as long as we have ways to sort through it all. Tools like SynthID Detector are just the beginning. The real work is in how we, as people, adapt our thinking. We need to learn to be curious, to ask questions, and to look for those little signs of truth in a world full of digital wonders.

How will we, as people, build trust in a world where anyone can make anything seem real?

Hiring with AI has become common.

But AI-driven interviews can feel impersonal and unfair. Candidates face awkward moments, technical glitches, and little chance to show personality. This affects how people view your company.

It’s not just about saving time. It shifts candidate experience.

Consider these impacts:

Reduced personal connection with candidates

Risk of overlooking soft skills and potential

AI deepfakes surge; trust must be proven, not guessed.

Alright, folks, grab a seat and hold on to your hats! Today’s dance floor is all about deepfakes! Yes, that digital wizardry that lets you put your grandma’s face on Tom Cruise climbing a mountain. Kind of cool, right? Until it’s not.

So what’s the deal with deepfakes? It’s like magic but the kind that can make you believe your cat can cook you dinner. Trust me, I tried. But when you’re in business, this magic trick can be more of a vanishing act—where trust disappears into thin air!

The Hitch: Our world, loaded with gadgets, is where deepfakes sneak around, like a squirrel with a mission. They’re getting better, faster, and cheesier than an infomercial at 3 a.m.

Why You Shouldn’t Freak Out:

Identity Checks: Think of it as checking if someone’s wearing a mask before they come to your birthday party.

Device Safety: Imagine putting a security lock on your cookie jar so nobody nabs your goodies.

Reality Badges: Like getting a sticker that says, “I’m the real deal, not just a hologram.”

Everyone’s Task: This isn’t just my problem, or yours, but if we all join in this virtual dance-off, deepfakes won’t know what hit them!

Now, you might be wondering: “What keeps these deepfakes so scary?” Let’s break it down:

FAQs Time!

Q: What are deepfakes made of? They’re brewed from AI, a pinch of creativity, and a dash of creepy. Like making soup, but with secrets and mystery.

Q: Can deepfakes trick my friends into thinking I can juggle fire? Oh, for sure! But remember, your insurance might not cover dragon breath burns.

Q: How can I check for a sneaky deepfake? Keep an eye out for wonky backgrounds and eyes that don’t quite match. Like a detective, but for pixels.

Q: Can deepfakes talk too? Indeed, they can chat more than a parrot at a party. Listen for odd lip syncs or voices that sound like they’re underwater.

Q: How do deepfakes affect my Sunday pancake biz? They could impersonate you asking for free syrup! Guard your recipe like it’s the key to the universe!

The name of the game is staying ahead. So when it comes to deepfakes, keep your eyes peeled and your imagination grounded. Stay savvy, and remember, the best magic is knowing when it’s just an illusion! Now, go ahead, deepfake, say your prayers because we’ve got our detective hats on!

Have questions? Like, “What kind of jam goes best with deepfake toast?”

AI app hacks: Debug faster, build smarter!

Building apps with AI isn’t just about tech—it’s about picking the right toolkit.

The tech stack you choose can make or break your project. Yet, people often forget how critical this decision is.

Here’s why the right tools matter:

Speeds up development.

Makes debugging easier.

Boosts user experience.

Fosters team collaboration.

So, how do you know which tools to pick?

Check out platforms like Replit or try Supabase for effortless integration.

Choose tools that let you quickly tweak and test your app.

Regularly seek feedback and improve; it’s crucial.

Work with your team to get fresh perspectives.

The right stack not only cuts down on time but also makes your product better.

AI & soft skills: Thrive in the job revolution!

AI is about to change the game when it comes to jobs. The World Economic Forum says we’ll see a whopping 78 million new job openings by 2030. But there’s a twist—nearly 40% of the skills we use today will soon be old hat.

So, what’s that mean for us?

Get Ready to Learn: We all need to keep learning and growing.

New Doors Will Open: Jobs that need human creativity and problem-solving will be in high demand.

Skill Shortages: Some jobs will be tough to fill because they need new kinds of skills.

Wondering how to keep up?

Keep Learning: Make it a habit to learn new things. Focus on getting better at teamwork, creativity, and thinking outside the box.

Team Up: Work with others to solve problems and come up with new ideas.

Be Adaptable: Stay open to trying new roles as things change around you.

It’s all about seeing the bright side of these changes.

!

If you spend time online, you know discussions get heated fast. People often talk past each other, and social media can make it worse. Now, X (what we used to call Twitter) is trying something different to help people find agreement instead of just fighting it out.

What’s the Big Problem?

Most online platforms split people into groups that don’t agree. Community Notes, X’s tool to fact-check posts, was supposed to fix this. It lets regular users add extra information to tweets if something seems wrong or confusing. For a note to show up, both left-leaning and right-leaning reviewers must agree it “adds helpful context.”

But here’s the rub: That almost never happens. Out of all the political notes submitted, over 85% never appear. People just couldn’t agree enough for the system to work.

How is X Trying to Fix It?

Now X is running a new test. They’re looking for posts that get likes from both sides—left and right. When they find one, they put a question under it: “What do you think?” Both sides can then say why they liked the post, not just that they liked it.

This way, the system can collect honest opinions from a wider range of people. If something draws support from people who usually disagree, maybe there’s real common ground.

What Could Change?

Letting regular users explain why they like a post could cool things down. It lets us see where we agree and where the gaps are. Maybe people aren’t as far apart as it seems. Or maybe we just disagree on less than we think.

What’s Next?

Nobody thinks this fixes online arguments overnight. But it’s a step that might help people see eye-to-eye, even just a little bit. X’s experiment invites us all to look for common answers, not just common complaints. Maybe, if we move away from only looking for a fight, we’ll learn something new together.

Bottom line: Social media doesn’t have to make us angrier. Sometimes, it can help us understand each other a little better.
